Midnight storm: The patter of rain wakes you up as the moon and stars hang in the sky, reminding you that you still have a few hours to sleep. You snuggle deeper into your blankets, listening to the low rumble of thunder that faintly vibrates beneath your fingertips, allowing the rhythm of the storm to lull you back to sleep.
Morning gardener: Your toes get wet from the blades of green grass beneath your feet. The air is cool and new and sweet. You pull your bathrobe tighter around you and blink your sleepy eyes. The flowers wave gently, bright beneath the dawning sun that gives everything a fresh brightness.
Beach babe: The boat rocks gently as you unpack another PB&J sandwich from the cooler. The heat always makes a sandwich taste better. You peek out from under your wide-brimmed hat and stare at the vast ocean that glistens in a broken pattern and stretches out and out and out. The air is salt and warmth and sunscreen. You lean back and close your eyes.
Summer fair: People congest the walkway, toting bags of kettle corn, cotton candy, and funnel cakes. It’s sunglasses, smiles, and shorts. You get on a Ferris wheel as clouds gather in the distance. The metal where you sit is still warm, but not as hot as it was earlier in the day. You carry a rainbow-twisted ice cream cone that’s half a foot tall and lick it as the ride begins. The smell of grease and food, noise and laughter leave you as you climb into the sky.
B-B-Q afternoon: Sunlight glows through the gingham checkered tablecloth as you lift it up and spread it across a wooden picnic table. The kids are running around, tumbling in the grass, and lighting a million sparklers. There’s watermelon, bowls of Cool Whip, B-B-Q sandwiches, icy jars of lemonade with striped straws, and apple pie.
Lakeside view: The day is coming to a close. Your legs are swinging off a dock as you recline back on your hands, your toes barely brushing the top of the water. The lake has turned orange and pink and yellow beneath the setting sun. There’s a cool breeze that sends a slight chill up your skin. Trees rustle slightly. You smile.
